Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a novel titled "The Moon Maid" - *and* there was a
character named the Moon Maid in the Dick Tracy comic strip.

This made me think that there was a common historical root from which these
came... and which also explained why the female crew of the moon base in UFO
thought of the idea to boost morale by wearing purple wigs, as if they were alien
women native to the Moon.

But a direct search only turned up a story by Garrett P. Serviss which first
appeared in a 1915 issue of Argosy, The Moon Maiden. Wikipedia's disambiguation
pages also noted that a lunar crater was once called the Moon Maiden.

But maybe my search is too direct.

After all, while the spots on the Moon led to "the Man in the Moon", other
cultures have seen a rabbit or a woman there. And there was the early science-
fiction move Frau im Mond.

Well, Moon Girl from E.C. comics turned up after a further Google search... like
the Green Lama, her current public-domain status has prompted a reboot.

Of course, the synodic month of 29.5 days naturally associates the Moon with
women, but I'm just wondering if there is a source for the notion that one
should expect to find on the Moon beautiful women with pale skins and an unusual
hair color. Even TV Tropes isn't helping me...

Well the Andersons arbitrarily decided that in the future just about
everyone would wear wigs just because that was the fashion. The purple
wigs were explained in the novelization as just made of a material that
didn't suffer static buildup. I'm not sure whether that concern was for
the delicate electric gear in the base, or just that a combination of
static build up in people's hair and low gravity from being on the moon
meant they'd look goofy if they didn't make purple wigs part of their
base uniform. Mostly it was about looking liking like science fiction
magazine covers of course.

Um, no. She isn't in the public domain; the Gaines family is as
obsessive on the subject as Disney. The trademark on the name lapsed,
though.

Marvel's current Moon Girl is a feminized version of Jack Kirby's Moon
Boy, from the original 1970s run of Devil Dinosaur, and has no
connection with the E.C. character.

And don't forget, a popular way to relax on the Moon is with a
cigarette.

The answer is "it was the 70s, and that's how television was done."

Jesus forgives sinners, not criminals.
One more time (Lucy in the Sky)....
Picture a gnome, hunching over a keyboard,
The monitor shining on two piggish eyes.
Smelly and drooling, his life is a shambles,
Po', po' Terry Austin now cries.
All that he wants is to matter on USENET,
To control whatever little he ca-a-an.
Now he dances to my tune, he just cannot help it,
He's outclassed, the poor (almost) man.
Little Terry Austin is cry-y-ying
Little Terry Austin is cry-y-ying
Ho....ho....ho.

Hugh Lofting's _Doctor Dolittle_ visited the Moon
but apparently found one man and no women. In the
story a vision of Princess Pepiteepa appears but
she isn't actually there, and I don't know what
she looked like. And I don't remember whether
this Doctor took any female companions on his
voyages. Specifically female humans...
numerically, most of his close friends were animals.

In rebooted films based on the book series,
Doctor Dolittle is African-American and female
and presently so is Moon Girl, which is a nickname
of super-intelligent Manhattan Lower East Side
schoolgirl Lunella Lafayette. She's got Inhuman
genetics and a similar-to-T-Rex dinosaur who was
accidentally transported from the primitive
past / alternate dimension or planet [*]
where he usually appeared as double act Devil
Dinosaur And (primate, presently left for dead,
probably not) Moon Boy. These things happen.

So now it's Devil Dinosaur and Moon Girl.
Or vice versa. In Lower Manhattan.

[*] Apparently it's the same thing. Physics!

Maya Dolittle isn't actually a doctor.
Technically she isn't a veterinarian either,
she hasn't qualified.

There's a sculptor in my home town named Chris Navarro. Here's a picture
of Navarro riding his life-size T-rex. (Woo-hoo, ride him cowboy!)

http://navarrogallerysedona.blogspot.com/2014/07/esscence-of-rex-life-size-t-rex-bronze.html

There's a cuter T-rex nearby in someone's backyard. It's more suited to
Lunella Lafayette. Although the cute T-rex looks a lot like the one that
Navarro's riding, it stands only 6-7' tall. It's made of metal and must
weigh tons.

The South Dakota school of Mines in Rapid City is a few hundred miles
from my town. It used to have dinosaur tracks painted on its sidewalks.

Thank you,
