The Thunder and Lightning series by John Varley

Four books of a young adult space opera apocalyptic series. I read the
well printed and bound MMPB versions. All of my four books have been
read at least three times, some five or six times now. The first was
published in 2004, the last in 2015. I do not know if there will be
more books in the series but I doubt it.

These are not hard science books, there are four major handwaviums
entailed within. The first handwavium is the squeezer drive, a
mechanism of squeezing any matter into a weightless state of any size
bubble with controlled releases from all to minute flow rates. The
squeezed matter is converted into dust. Yes, the perfect mouse trap.

The squeezer drive is built into a space ship and the kids take off for
Mars. They arrive at Mars in less than a week due to the 1.0G drive and
are the first to walk on Mars. They will not be the last.

Two of the other handwaviums are related to further refinements of the
squeezer drive, the other is not. The third handwavium is related to
the loss of the planet Earth as a home for humankind.

The writing style of the series is quite unique. Each book is "written"
by a new generation from the first book. So by the fourth book, we are
very familiar with four generations of the protagonists.

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Amazon ratings: 4.0 out of 5 stars (97 reviews), 3.8 out of 5 stars (42
reviews), 3.9 out of 5 stars (49 reviews), 4.3 out of 5 stars (60 reviews)

Alastair Reynolds' "Poseidon's Children" trilogy does that as well.
