I've read all of the top 12 except the Rucker, and none of the bottom
12 except the Leckie and the Chambers. Go figure. (I did try to
read the Bear, but bounced off it...and at a time in my life when
I almost never stopped reading a book I'd started, too.)
Very similar list for me: I've read all the top 12 except the Rucker,
though I've read a couple more of the bottom 12 (I liked the Wright).
Greg Bear _Queen of Angels_ is on my Favorites bookcase; I obviously
liked it a lot. But there's a certain category of books to which I
realize my long-term opinion seems to depend strongly on my frame of
mind when I first read it. Books that seem to give off a New Age vibe
are part of that category, and Bear's book is an example. I either
strongly like, or find it difficult to finish those books. Elizabeth
Hand's _Winterlong_ is another book in that category for me (I don't
really know why, since it's very different) that other people love but
I dislike. Perhaps my reaction depends on whether I can "connect the dots"
the first time I read it? So I don't know whether to recommend such books
or not. But I liked Bear's book.
