seeing as how it's a quasi-dystopia in which vampires (the science
fiction virus type of vampire) have taken over the (male) aristocracy,
overthrown Parliament, and keep humanity suppressed with robot soldiers.
It kind of makes the French Revolution look pretty good.
Our heroine hides in the Whitechapel slums from a "blueblood" pursuer
while she drifts into the orbit of the the gang boss who dominates the
area and is also a blueblood, despite his lack of aristocratic
credentials. In universe the word "vampire" is only used for those who
the virus turns into totally feral predators. Some of them turn fast on
infection but more live a very long life before they reach the end stage.
There are also genetic werewolves so I assume the next book will be a
werewolf romance. After that my money's on token female vampire
romance. There's no hint of any kind of psychic powers so as paranormal
romances go, it's kind of on the hard sf side. So...no witch romance.
It is very definitely a romance though and it's got the sex scenes and
dubiously feasible ever after to prove it.
But really I thought it was rather a good start. Since this is just the
start of a series progress toward actual reform or bloody revolution is
limited at this point.
