A major hit in China, it was stealth-released on Netflix on May 6, 2019.
While there certainly hasn't been a blizzard of publicity, its not a secret;
I heard about this a few months ago.

Haven't had a chance to watch yet; been busy the last couple of nights (and
tonight too), and the HBO Chernobyl docudrama is higher in the SVR queue (Oh,
the hard decisions of a time of Peak SF TV).

This seems like it would be up Lynn's alley: disaster and shit-loads of
driving from one place to another.

"Earth’s rotation is halted (dooming a considerable fraction of humanity
as tsunamis wash across the world) and the Earth is propelled out of its
orbit towards Alpha Centauri. The journey will take 2500 years. "

What ? How do people stay attached to the planet if there is no gravity ?

Why would there be no gravity? The earth still has mass.

Interesting. "If the Earth stopped rotating, would gravity stop?"

Blu-tack and duck tape.

But where are you getting "no gravity" from?

And the real question would be "how does the planet stay attached
to the planet if there's no gravity."

Lynn may be assuming that an EMP Apocalypse was used to destroy the
Earth's magnetic field, thereby stopping its rotation. :P

I would be more worried about air conditioning. All that hurtling
through the ether is liable to produce a great deal of friction.
Where will the heat go?

Note how I carefully avoided trying to calculate how much waste heat
enough fusion drives to get Earth to umpty km/s in the time stated
would generate. And how I didn't point out how much energy is tied
up in Earth's spin.

stopping the spin is an interesting problem - the solid inner core
isn't rigidly attached to the mantle, and stopping the spin of the surface
won't immediately stop the core, leading to interesting coupling effects.

Still haven't seen the show, but its not clear why the spin needs to be
stopped.

I think because they thought it would avoid having to shutdown and restart
the engines as the Earth's rotation took them away from the correct
orientation to push the Earth in the right direction.

Hopefully not because there's a giant rocket nozzle on the back.

Might we actually want it to spin faster, for more magnetic field? (Would spinning faster give us a stronger magnetic field?) What would the aurorae look like? 2500 year trip, but low acceleration, so top speed somewhere more than 1/5 a percent of c.

Flash Gordon is fairly innocent of science, but in the post-Star Wars cartoon the scary-close approach of Mongo to Earth featured lightning flashing between them. It'd be cool if that could be justified.

Nope! There are hundreds of them.

Nope. I learned something yesterday. I'll probably forget it tomorrow.
