I'm currently plodding through <A Plague of Giants> by Kevin Hearne.

In the Gorin Mogen section of "Day" (chapter) 5, tenth paragraph,
the second sentence begins "We gave them rein to pick up trails".

I actually had to stop reading for a moment, shocked as I was by the
sight of "rein" both without "free" *and* correctly spelt.

Clearly, that a correct spelling is shocking is a sign of the
apocalypse.

I thought it was common to see sentences like:

We need to rein in Federal spending.

Riprock pulled on the reins of his horse.

But indeed to give someone anything but free rein is unusual.
