It's very impressive, but I was promised more. In Blish's "They Shall Have Stars" we have ion drives powered by atomic piles taking people as far as Jupiter in 2013 - in something close to a dystopia where scientific progress has stalled. Clarke gave us a (no doubt very expensive) mission to Jupiter in 2001, with routine use of a lunar base. Moonbase Alpha featured in the TV series Space: 1999 (not very good, but then it was TV). Heinlein has Luna City founded in 1990.

Yeah, I didn't look real close at that URL.

Pretty impressive however you get there. 33 is an interesting number for
it to work out to..

Yup. Starship has only six rocket motors. Booster is a beast.

It's not something that looks like it comes out of a neat packing. In particular, it's not something I can get by trying to make nested octagons on a grid of equilateral triangles, which was my first guess. If you look at the picture in https://interestingengineering.com/innovation/spacex-mars-raptor-engine-setup it looks like 33 is what thrust and weight worked out at and they fudged up an arrangement afterwards. There is an outer circle of engines with the bells pretty much touching, a looser inner circle, and a triangle of three engines at the centre of that, wiht roughly the same separation as the inner circle (20 + 10 + 3 = 33).

The outer ring is fixed. The inner ring and central 3 are steerable, and so need more room.

Thanks for this - I was also wondering if the inner gaps were slightly irregular, or if that was just camera angle. If the inner engines are steerable and not quite lined up for the picture, that would explain this.

Exactly - though I was one of those who as a young teenager saw 2001:
A Space Odyssey and hoped it would be prophetic.

I hated Richard Nixon far more for the way he emasculated the US space
program than I ever did for his 18 1/2 minutes of blank tape

He pretty much set the program back 40 years.

The thread you are replying to is over a year old.

IFT-5, a couple weeks ago, was far more spectacular.
They grabbed the descending booster out of the ari.
