Oh my, are things that bad for Garfield ?
He's in group two of the Gannett 34, so things could certainly be worse.

The what? Oh, local editions of USA Today, or something. For comparison purposes, our local (non-Gannett) paper carries all the comics they've put in Group1, two (not Garfield) from Group 2, none from Groups 3 & 5,, and one each from Groups 4 & 6 (four more from Group 6 on Sunday). Plus three not on the menu.
It's possible comics fans (and this particular comic's fans) are not into college sportsball. The Transfer Portal and Name, Image, and Likeness rights are recent innovations to share the wealth or incentivize college athletes. It makes an uncomfortable fit with the idea of characters transfering between strips (Garfield's strip is named after him!) but, as Janis says, they'd need better writing than this!
Now I realize that the 'Transfer Portal' is something to do with college sports. I had no idea.
