Murder and Magic (Lord Darcy, volume 2) by Randall Garrett

Although magic is real and the Plantagenets have enjoyed
eight centuries of rule, murder is still murder and it is
up Lord Darcy to deliver justice.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Lord Darcy stories[1], but as a few of your
commenters hinted at, I think my enjoyment was aided by sprinkling the
stories out between other reads. I suspect reading them all in a row
would not work as well.
