My favorite Evel Knievel cartoon is where he's revving up his
motorcycle and telling the reporter "Look at all these people to see
me jump over 25 cars!" and revs his engine and takes off before the
reporter is able to say "well er actually they're here to see you jump
over 24....."

My grown children have no idea who Knievel is/was...

G K Chesterton once stumbled across the idea that it was our imperfection, or possibility of failure, that allowed us to enjoy sport. As he observed about the less dangerous sport of croquet, if he could hit the ball through the wicket with the same assurance as if he walked over and put it there, he would have no reason to hit it, as he has no reason to walk over and put it there. He knew our fallen nature, and wouldn't deny some are rooting for the 25 car to get him, but what sells the tickets is the possibility of success.

I was just going to say that's a pretty obscure joke in 2024. Probably
only peopole still reading an actual newspaper would get it.
