Polysorbates are an emulsifier used in many products - foods,
cosmetics, household cleaners, etc. As the comic strip says, one use is
to keep creamy ingredients creamy, whether that artifical cream in a
Twinkie or the creamy texture of a liquid soap. There is nothing wrong
with eating or using it, unless of course you do it to idiotic
extremes, like anything else.

There are many different polysorbates - "Polysorbate 20", "Polysorbate
60", etc. The number indicates (to chemists anyway) which type of fatty
acid it contains.

And, famously, polysorbate 80:

Could well be, as well as women's face creams, and many many more
products. It simply keeps whatever it is in creamy by acting as an
anti-oxidant chemical. It has no taste or flavouring.

It's the important nutrient that makes Zippy the Pinhead what he is.
Googling "Zippy the Pinhead Polysorbate-80" should bring up some cartoons.

It's what you get when you combine stearic acid (from animal fats,
coconut oil, palm oil, etc) with soribtol (found in many fruits) to
create an ester and water.

Suffice it to say that if you buy into the claims of the "chemical
free living" promoters and that both EU and US regulators are the
tools of "big chemical" you may wish to avoid it. Like everything
else, if contains impurities or you consume or apply too much of
it, it can be harmful.

There was a funny bit on Twinkies ref that in "Mortal Engines".
(Which was a movie *very* badly served by its trailer. When it turned
into "Steampunk Star Wars" it got pretty good).
