I neither get the comic (what is it about?) nor where Captain Jack would
come in.

What? :)

"Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright"

Captain Jack is another Billy Joel Song

and
I loathe you just the way you are is referencing one of his big hits

Thanks! To you and the others who replied and explained. :)

(I'd have to look up who Billy Joel is, but am not that curious.)

I also won't ask what's supposed to be funny about it. I'll just go
with: The only Captain Jack I know is Captain Jack Harkness. :)

Thanks again!

I may have mentioned this before...
I saw Billy Joel open for a band called Pablo Cruz in 1977 at the
Berkeley Community Theater. Pablo Cruz was the headliner, if that was
not clear. Billy Joel blew them away. People were leaving the auditorium
while they were playing.

Yeah, lots of interesting pairings have happened over the years. My
favorite: the Jimi Hendrix Experience was the opening act for the
Monkees for a tour in 1967. They lasted 7 dates before they quit the tour.

That is, indeed, a possible interpretation.

Just not the one I made.

Oh, well.

Oh, well.
It's pronouns. Billy Joel is "he", I take
it, and a band which I suggest was "Pablo Cruise"
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pablo_Cruise>
is "they", in the manner of "Jefferson Airplane",
although Wikipedia states that "fans", if the
term is used correctly, would ask which of the
people on stage was Pablo himself. They were
told "He's the guy in the middle."

But I too read it that Billy Joel was
blowing audience members out of the
auditorium. If literally, that's too
much amplification.

"Pablo Cruz may refer to:
Pablo Cruz (soccer) (born 1991), American soccer player
Pablo Cruz (actor) (born 1984), Mexican actor"

That is possible.

Then again, it might be a "singular they". How could we tell?

It seemed to me pretty clear was that people either came
for the opening act, and left when it was done, or found
Pablo Cruz such a letdown after hearing Billy Joel that they
cut their losses and left.

Hopefully, Stephan Pastis does not have a friend named Captain Jack.
I neither get the comic (what is it about?) nor where Captain Jack would
come in.
What? :)
Explaining jokes never works...

Billy Joel wrote and performed a song called "The Piano Man". (Sing us
a song you're the Piano Man, sing us a song tonight...)

He also wrote and performed a song called "Captain Jack". (Captain Jack
will get you high tonight...)

Cheers,

Not sure on the Captain Jack reference either, but PBS usually does
terrible puns on Sundays.

In this case, Pastis has assembled components to make a sound-alike of
the first verse of Billy Joel's hit song, 'Piano Man'.

'Sing us a song: You're the Piano Man
Sing us a song tonight!
We're all all in the mood for a melody,
And you've got us feeling alright!

Captain Jack was a very edgy song in 1974 ? on the radio. Masturbation,
drug dealers (that was Captain Jack), heroin, junkies, closet queens,
suicide. Awesome song.

Captain Jack is the street name for the local drug pusher in Billy
Joel's Long Island, NY neighborhood where Billy Joel grew up in the
1960s. Captain Jack specialized in cocaine and heroin.

"Captain Jack will get you high tonight. Take you to your special
Island. Captain Jack will get you by tonight. Just a little push and
you'll be smiling."
