“The rare astronomical event is similar to a Blue Moon but for a
different phase in the lunar cycle.”

“This year will see (kind of) another rare astronomical event taking
place across the night sky. On December 30-31, we will have a rare Black
Moon to see out 2024.”

I swear they are just making up moon-related terminology the past few years.

In this case, apparently, in 2016. At least in this sense.

[https://www.heyblackmoon.com/] and many others use it in a different
context.

Semantic goo is everywhere.

Its the laziest of lazy journalism, blood moons, supermoons, etc. It's
right up there with 'near miss by asteroid' stories, where the 'near
miss' is several times the distance of the moon. Spare me.

I did once try looking up the source of 'worm moon', thinking it was
another white person's invention, but it turns out to be very old,
authentically Native American.

The whole point of a 'new moon' is that you DON'T see anything.

(As I first found out when I went outside and looked up at the sky
during what the almanac said was the exact time of 'newness' - I was
about 14 at the time...led to an interesting talk with Dad afterwards
- giggle)
