The Nebula finalists of 1986! Halley's comet reached perihelion,
Soviet liner MS Mikhail Lermontov began its ongoing submarine
exploration of the Marlborough Sound, and Big Bird was cut from
the crew roster of the Jan 8, 1986 launch of Space Shuttle Columbia.

625 pages is a novella?
KSR wrote two different stories with the same title. I think it is
a rare example where the novel is not an expansion of the short work.
