Stephen Robinett: The Man Responsible

I first encountered Stephen Robinett with a story in Omni magazine called
"Hellbent" which made a big impact on me as a kid, and more recently I have
started looking up some of the other stuff he wrote. This book was published
by Ace in 1978 and takes place in the early 21st century. Told from the
viewpoint of a lawyer who is hired to investigate a fraud case, it goes in
all kinds of curious directions that are not evident in advance. The world
is much like that of the 1970s except with very different automotive and
computer technology, and in the end a lot of his predictions about the future
have come true. I really, really recommend this book which is much less
dated than typical earthbound SF of that era.

"C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis."

I don't believe I read this, but I recall greatly enjoying his
_Stargate_ when it serialzed in Analog about the same time.
(As by Tak Hallus, if you are actually looking for it in Analog).

I'm a bit surprised he apparently only wrote 3 novels.

Five: two science fiction novels under his own name (Stargate and The
Man Responsible), one science fiction novel as Steve Hahn (Mindwipe!),
and two mysteries under his own name (Final Option and Unfinished
Business). There was also a collection, Projections.
